W1: LT: Q3: SCAMPER teaspoon (“Sporkas”)

Practical assignment (problem solving)

You are given a teaspoon as an object. Now apply each one of the SCAMPER techniques to it and give a brief explanation of what new product comes of this and how it can be marketed.

When I started on this practical assignment, I first started with the S (Substitute) and was planning to apply each one of the SCAMPER techniques in the right order. But as I sketched and and applied the different SCAMPER techniques, the order came out completely different as you can see on the first sketch I made.

Eliminate

I started by eliminating the convex shape of the spoon, making it flat.

Substitute

I substituted the spoon with a spork.

Magnify/modify

I modified the shape and magnified the handle.

Combine

I combined the spork with another one.

Adapt

I adapted the two sporks so that they became a clip/tong.

Reverse/rearrange

I rearranged the tong to become two sporks again.

Then I made the curved part as a part that you can take off, to make the device multifunctional.

Put to other uses

From a regular spoon, I ended up with a combination of spork and tong, to be used when eating tapas. The spork itself can be used to get smaller foods like grapes and tomatoes. The sporks together is put to other uses when you add the curved part. It then becomes a tong, which you can use to grab foods like salmon rolls or chicken wings.

How can it be marketed?

In these days with the pandemic going on, it has become even more important that people wash/sanitize their hands, and avoid unnecessary touching of food (for example in supermarkets). This product can be marketed as a safe way of eating tapas, as tapas is known to be “finger food”. With this product people don’t have to touch the food when they are eating tapas together. They also avoid getting grease on their hands, for example when eating chicken wings. I chose to name the product “Sporkas”, as a combination of “spoon”, “fork” and “tapas”.
